Frances Tieran (Christian Reid)

A North Carolina native whose father was killed at the Battle of Manassas while serving the Confederacy as a colonel, Tiernan was received into the Catholic Church in 1868. She was a loyal member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and her play, ‘Under the Southern Cross,’ which, with her many other works, was written under the pseudonym Christian Reid, became nationally famous as an impassioned presentation of the Confederacy’s cause. She wrote nearly 50 novels and hundreds of short stories, poems and travelogues.
